The starting point for the design of University Quarter in Lübeck is the symmetrical layout of the historical hospital complex. The hospital’s central axis acts as a reference, giving form to the central open space: the new District Park. This park connects the treatment wards of the hospital, the campus and the adjacent neighbourhood, and as such becomes the hub and busy interface for people in the area. This combination and multi-functionality are the best prerequisites for a thriving open space.

An essential characteristic of the design for the new park is the way in which the trees are used to produce a number of different effects. The trees help to define the central space, drawing attention to the central axis and its role within the context of the wider city fabric. Their planning is shaped by the influences at work within the immediate surroundings: a “splintering” of the adjoining areas, asymmetrical edges and differing intensities of development. By their particular arrangement they organize the large overall area of the park into comprehensible units, emphasising and defining differing states of density and emptiness, which in turn suggest how these individual spaces may be used.

The resultant area includes elements characteristic of a classical open space: the expansive esplanade on the north side of the park faces a promenade on the southern edge; in between a bowling green with generous lawns set aside for a variety of different uses; a lively tree-covered university campus and the reflective calm of the hospital park at the eastern end.

Ultimately, it is the use of trees which unites the park structure over its entire length into a spatial continuum: the various spatial and functional relationships between the areas shape the identity of the new district park. The arrangement and composition of the open spaces, despite the use of traditional elements, result in an unmistakably contemporary park which nonetheless meets the demands put upon it.
